What to Expect from a Certified Mastectomy Fitter
After undergoing a mastectomy, finding the right breast form can be a crucial step towards regaining confidence and comfort. This is where a certified mastectomy fitter comes in. At Bras and Honey we are passionate healthcare professionals that are trained to fit women for breast forms and mastectomy bras, ensuring that the products chosen are both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Here's what you can expect when working with Bras and Honey mastectomy fitters in San Diego.

Who is a Certified Mastectomy Fitter?
A certified mastectomy fitter is a healthcare professional who has completed specialized training to fit women for breast forms. They possess the knowledge and skills required to help you find the perfect fit, taking into consideration your lifestyle, preferences, and medical needs.

According to the American Cancer Society, you can be fitted for a breast form once your scars have healed, typically around six to eight weeks after a mastectomy. If you've undergone radiation treatments, you may need to wait until your skin is no longer red or tender. Your breast cancer treatment team can provide guidance on the best timing for you.

Preparing for Your First Appointment
At your first fitting appointment, it's important to come prepared with the following:

Prescription: Bring a prescription from your doctor for the breast form and mastectomy bras. These can be sent directly to us by your Doctor or insurance company or we can help you through this process, contact us directly if you require more information
Health Insurance Card: Have your health insurance card ready. We take care of the insurance billing process, we can bill the insurance company directly or provide help if you would prefer to bill your insurance company directly.
Best-Fitting Bras: Bring one or two of your best-fitting bras that you wore before your mastectomy surgery. Ideally bring a range of clothing that you would normally wear as this can help you with your decision process. Sometimes, fitters have different articles of clothing for you to try on over the breast form, but you can also bring your own clothing to see how they look with the prosthesis. A fitted t-shirt or Tank top can help you during your fitting.
Questions and Preferences
During the Bra fitting at Bras and Honey, our certified mastectomy fitter will ask you several questions to understand your lifestyle and preferences better. These may include:

  • Your typical daily activities at home and work.
  • Your level of physical activity and types of exercise you enjoy.
  • Whether you plan to wear the breast form all the time, most of the time, or just occasionally.
  • Your preference for comfort over appearance, or vice versa.
  • Any concerns about having a realistic-feeling breast.
  • Whether you want the option to wear a breast form without a bra.
  • Whether you aim to be the same size as before, especially if you had a double mastectomy or implant removal.
  • Concerns about out-of-pocket costs.

Trying on Breast Forms

At Bras and Honey we will first establish your band size of the bra by trying on serval options. Once we have established your band size, we then work to find the perfect breast form to suit your shape. This involves trying many sizes and shapes of prothesis to
You may want to get fitted for both a non-silicone leisure breast form and a silicone breast form, so you have options for different occasions. During your Mastectomy bra fitting in San Diego, our trained bra fitters will asses you requirements and establish the best size and shape for you.
